Interview with Joey, Bob, Anne, Beth, Gary and Cheev

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Joey: yes
Bob: Somewhat regular, usually for a few hours twice a day.
Anne: Yes.
Beth: yes, but they were collect, which didnt help.
Gary: Yes. They would turn on after breakfast and cut off after lunch, then turn on after we were let out again and turned off right before bedtime.
Beth: NO
Cheev: yes but i was not able to get my phone #s

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Joey: $3 for a collect call
Bob: Only collect calls were permitted, was pretty expensive.
Anne: Collect calls - $2.50.
Beth: it was collect
Gary: The charges were outrageous. 1.50 per minute and the calls were horrible quality and the system they used would often drop calls or eat up prepaid minutes without reason.
Cheev: dont know

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Joey: No
Bob: Not permitted phone cards, wouldn't have worked anyway.
Anne: No.
Beth: no, the person that your calling just needs to accept your collect call.
Gary: The person you call would have to put money on their account to be able to receive calls.
Cheev: dont know

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Joey: I have no idea
Bob: No incoming calls, outgoing were subject to monitoring.
Anne: I am not sure but I think so.
Beth: yes
Gary: As far as I know, yes.
Cheev: dont know

phone system is terrible. Most of the time calls don't even get to the point where we can accept the charges. At least 20 calls made to get one completed.

A good friend of mine is in jail. I put fifthy dollars on my account an only got three calls. A nd then when he call me the fourth time the recording came on and and said to receive this call you need to put more money on your card to receive this call. So they are telling me for three calls i paid fifithy dollars this is crazy. Who do i need to talk to. To get my other minutes i paid for.

Why is it that lately when my relative call me, the operator Does Not give me an option of accepting a collect call. Rather it states that I can only get a call from my relative by setting up an a prepaid account and that I need to have my Visa or Master Card ready. I do not want to set up an account with the company that has a contract with the phone company, but is not given another option. Plus how did I no longer qualify to accept collect calls? Please respond as I decided to communicate via the internet before sending my letter asking for clarification on this issue.

The same problem happened to me-- I was unable to accept a collect call from an inmate. Many mobile phone carriers do not permit this. To be able to accept collect calls from inmates, you can set up a pre-paid account in increments of $25 or $50. Call 1-800-483-8314 and have a credit card ready to create an account.

I knew some one who was there and his family was in michigan so who ever is in jail needs to make the call at where ever he need just dial 1 and then code area and the number and the person needs to accept the call but long distance calls are more expensives if you put 10 dollars you have to finish everything in one call other way you would not have enought credit for next time

Debbie, we got a cell phone with an Atlanta # so calls would be local. Collect LD was something like $3.95 setup per call plus $.89/minute. Call to our Atlanta cell phone # are $2.70 period. Hope that helps
